Heraldry

In 1968, the oldest heraldic court in the world that is still in daily operation, the Lord Lyon, King of Arms in Scotland confirmed in a matriculation to the Order the arms that it bore prior to 1672. Lord Lyon is a Great Officer of State of Queen Elizabeth II and head of the Court of the Lord Lyon.

The Green Book of St Lazarus is the register of the armorial bearings granted and assumed by Members of the New Zealand Grand Priory, who have elected to have these recorded by the Order. It was opened in the presence of the 48th Grand Master on Easter Monday 8 April 1996 in Christchurch. A copy of this register is available here [15 meg download].

An article on the heraldic nature of the Order by Prof. Michael Ross is available here.
